Roth vs. Traditional?

Mark and Matt -

Huge fan of both your shows!

It seems that the assumption / recommendation with all the accounts we have, whether it be to invest through an IRA, 401k, etc. that it be via Roth. My question is..why so emphatically Roth? I understand the analogy of it being a tax free ATM one day in the future however the biggest (and a valid) “Pro” Traditional argument is that presumably most of us when we reach retirement age and can withdraw from these accounts, will be in a lower tax bracket when not working compared to our high earning years in the workforce. Yes, it is unpredictable what the tax rate environment will be 5, 10, 20 years from now or whenever we retire and if taxes increase it will have made sense to be contributing to a Roth the whole time..but I don’t think that is the reason you guys are in on the Roth train. Also, if you do traditional now in your higher earning years, you can have more money to put into investments (maybe I’m thinking of that wrong).

Maybe it’s a simple answer that I’m missing. I personally hedge against not knowing what future tax rates will be by splitting my IRA and 401k contributions equally between Roth and Traditional. Convince me why I should be doing all Roth.

Thank you for answering.
