I Airbnb my townhouse in Illinois 10 months out of the year. I live in California but return to Illinois for 2 months to do repairs , etc. Can I right off all travel expenses and food? Also can I write off the line of credit interest that I borrowed against my stocks for the downpayment even though I still have a small mortgage on the townhouse?
Thank You

Not a comment on the legality of what I do - but I do the exact same thing although perhaps a little differently. ![]()
I maintain a small space in my airbnb so my travel expenses never include hotel unless there I am there to work on something at the house that requires me to be off premises. I certainly deduct my airfare, rental car if I need one or rental truck if I have to haul something. I’m in my house so I don’t expense for food but - I’m thinking why not.
I’ve found over the years that it is usually significantly less expensive for me to handle most repairs (and manage the others). That alone would justify deducting my travel. I try to coordinate my travel when possible but my primary reason for going is always to handle something with the house.
I usually read, read and re-read the instructions for Schedule E (& C). The IRS has great guidance.

" You can deduct all ordinary and necessary expenses, such as taxes, interest, repairs, insurance, management fees, agents’ commissions, and depreciation."
“You can deduct ordinary and necessary auto and travel expenses related to your rental activities, including 50% of meal expenses incurred while traveling away from home. However, business meals are 100% deductible if the meals are food and beverages provided by a restaurant and paid or incurred after December 31, 2020, and before January 1, 2023.”
Hope this helps.
